My VIDA personal trainer Susie Powell and I were laughing the other day because even though I’m almost twice her size, we are eating around the same number of calories per day (2,000.)

One of the counter-intuitive things I’ve learned about fitness is the more fit you are and the more lean mass you have, the more calories your body needs to fuel your metabolism and maintain muscle. Susie is a little ball of muscle so she needs those 2,000 calories to maintain, and yet for my fitness level and current body fat and muscle levels, that’s the amount I need to be able to keep losing weight.

It’s a good reminder that we could all eat the same things and still look completely different and that our bodies and metabolisms are all different. Fitness is largely about figuring out where you currently are, where you want to be, and coming up with a customized plan for your own body to get there.

Each of our fitness journeys is unique to our own bodies. I’ve learned to focus on what works for me and not worry about what others are doing. Susie’s personal training and VIDA Registered Dietitian Addie Claire Merletti’s nutrition guidance has been invaluable to me in figuring that out.
