National Wellness Month Written by: Kim Kisner

Wellness. We all know it’s important, but ask yourself, is your self-care among the top of your priorities today? This week? Do you pursue it as an ongoing goal?

Sometimes our own wellness can get lost among busy schedules and caring for others, so it’s a good idea to check in with yourself and reset at times.

August is National Wellness Month, so it’s a perfect time to assess your self-care habits and see where you may be able to fine-tune some things.

And don’t worry, you don’t have to overhaul your life or make big sweeping changes. Even making just a few small changes to your daily and weekly routine can add up to big improvements in your overall health.

To that end here are seven things you can revisit, and if you’re not already doing so, make them more of a priority in your life.

Nutrition

Food is a cornerstone of wellness. Are you eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, getting enough vitamins and minerals, consuming foods containing whole grains and fiber, choosing lean meats, and watching your intake of unhealthy fats, sugars and salt? If this seems a bit overwhelming and you need help, a VIDA Nutritional Counselor is happy to assist you!

Hydration

On average more than 50% of the human body is composed of water, and it’s important to keep it that way! Proper hydration is absolutely essential to good health. Drinking enough water helps regulate your body temperature, keep your organs functioning efficiently and joints lubricated, delivers nutrients to your cells, and improves your overall sleep and mood. Drink between half an ounce to an ounce of water for each pound of your body weight.

Fitness

The exercises you do at the gym aren’t just about looking good – not even by a long shot. Exercise also helps regulate mood, sleep, and appetite by increasing the production of the hormone serotonin. It boosts your immune system and protects you from illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. So, go to the gym. Try out new workouts and classes. If you need more direction, check in with a VIDA Personal Trainer who will create a completely customized plan that fits your goals and current fitness level. No matter which route you choose, try to move every day.

Sleep

Missing high-quality sleep regularly can increase your risk of depression, weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and memory and concentration problems. Adults should get at least seven hours of sleep per night though 1 in 3 fails to reach that minimum, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Relaxation

Finding time to relax is no longer considered an indulgence, it’s proven to be critical for your personal wellbeing. Relaxation reduces stress and improves your mental health as well as lower your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.  Find an activity that brings your stress levels down and make the time for it. One way you can do this is through regular massages, and Aura Spa offers therapeutic massages plus other services focused so you can focus on your specific needs.

Connection

Being part of a community is a vital element of wellness. Fellowship with others provides a sense of purpose and belonging and makes us feel like we are a part of something greater than ourselves. It can also significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression. At VIDA we are passionate about community and work every day to create an environment that’s conducive to building connections. So whether it’s at the gym, through neighborhood get-togethers, or within a club or organization you belong to, make sure you are getting your fair share of socializing!

And last but not least, here’s a bonus consideration…

Treat Yourself!

Treat yourself to some self-care through a luxurious hair treatment or even a new look. The Stylists at Bang Salon are ready and waiting to give you a fresh new cut, a clean or bold style, or new color. A small upgrade can make a world of difference in your outlook, and you are worth it!

Enjoy this month of wellness and self-care. Try some new things from this list or make one yourself because when you are well, your life is better not just for you, but for those around you.
