Celebrate AAPI Month Written by: VIDA Fitness

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the AAPI community’s diverse cultures, traditions, and accomplishments. This month is dedicated to acknowledging historical challenges and triumphs, spotlighting AAPI voices, sharing uplifting stories, and cultivating deeper understanding and unity.

At VIDA, we celebrate our differences and want everyone to feel safe, welcomed, and valued. We encourage our community members to share their experiences, small and large, continually educate themselves on racial bias, speak out against hate, and celebrate diversity. Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month offers a dynamic and enriching opportunity for both individuals and communities to participate in activities that enhance appreciation and insight. Here are several ways to actively celebrate and honor this significant month:

  • Attend Cultural Events
    • This May, we will run specialty-themed group fitness classes at every club, powered by AAPI artists, music, and culture. Check the schedule in the VIDA app for a complete list of classes and celebrations.
    • At VIDA City Vista, we are hosting a signature Defend & Heal kickboxing and yoga class to support the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). All proceeds from registrations to donations will be donated to APAICS, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting AAPI participation and representation at all levels of the political process, from community service to elected office.
  • Support AAPI Businesses: Eat, shop, and use services owned and provided by AAPI individuals. See what’s in your area with Districtly Local’s directory of AAPI-owned businesses in the DMV.
  • Participate in educational programs focusing on the history, contributions, and issues facing the AAPI community. The Library of Congress has a schedule of events, both in-person and virtual, that anyone can enjoy.
  • Watch a documentary about AAPI culture or a movie with lead AAPI representation.
  • Visit exhibitions or museums featuring the work of AAPI artists.
  • Engage with local AAPI organizations and nonprofits. Volunteering can help support their mission and broaden a deeper understanding of the culture.
  • Try new recipes to explore the diverse cuisines of the AAPI community. Food is a great gateway to understanding and appreciating a culture.
  • If you can, donate to causes that help the AAPI community. Many organizations work on legal advocacy, social justice, education, and health, and they benefit greatly from financial support.
    • Not sure where to start? You don’t have to go far! VIDA is selling limited edition AAPI month t-shirts. We’re donating $5 from every shirt sold in May to APAICS. Get yours in the gear shop.
