VIDA Instructor of the Month: Tim Williams
Tim Williams’s (Timbo) classes are fun, fast-paced, and probably the toughest workouts you will encounter all week. Tim, a former track runner, teaches nine (yes, nine) different classes here at VIDA and maintains an unparalleled level of energy and enthusiasm for each one.
Tim Williams grew up in Florida where he started playing sports the second he was old enough. He had a very active childhood, starting with tee-ball and soccer at a young age and then moving on to track and cross-country in high school and college.
During college, Tim was so successful at Track & Field that he had the opportunity to train professionally at the IMG Sports Academy and was sponsored by True Athlete and Nike. Unfortunately, getting injured put an end to his track running days, but he still remained committed to fitness and staying active. He started taking Les Mills classes at the YMCA in Florida and was encouraged by his instructors to start teaching. After graduating from college he decided he wanted to be able to share his passion and motivation for fitness with others and got certified.
“I like to show that fitness can be both fun and challenging. I love getting to be a part of someone’s fitness journey. Knowing that they trust me to be a part of it and that I get to witness people doing things they didn’t think possible is my favorite part of teaching,” says Tim.
After teaching Les Mills for a year and a half in Florida, Tim heard about a new gym opening in DC called VIDA Fitness from his good friend from college, Ali Burgess! He moved to DC in October 2014 and helped open our brand new Yards location at the front desk, before quickly transitioning into teaching full time.
Tim started off teaching Cycle, VIDA Xtreme and On the Ball for VIDA, and has since added Spin & Sculpt, HIIT, Conditioning, VIDA RX, Killer Core and VIDA Assets to his schedule. He teaches 20 classes a week total, with sometimes as many as six in a row back to back! However, you’d never be able to guess that he might be on his sixth class of the day. He always brings the same positive energy to each class and ensures that all of his students leave sweaty and exhausted.
“It’s easy for me to keep up my enthusiasm for a class when I see the students piling in the room excited, nervous and determined to work hard and fight for something they want. I like to keep my workouts fresh and challenging (because we all know there is no change without a challenge) and use muscle confusion to maximize the time they spend in my class,” says Tim.
Tim keeps his workouts fresh by incorporating new exercises into the routines every week (he gets inspiration from his own training sessions with VIDA personal trainer Jeff Cain at the Yards) and by constantly finding new music for his playlists.
“Music plays such a big role in staying motivated. All my classes are choreographed to staying with the counts of the music and the exercises match the tempo and intensity of the songs,” he says.
Keeping his students motivated is definitely one of his strengths. You won’t find Tim just giving orders from the front of the studio – he’s moving around the classroom doing jump squats next to you, correcting form and giving encouragement through the entire class. He loves the energy created in all his classes, but says if he had to pick a favorite it would be Spin.
“Spin gives me such a unique adrenaline & endorphin rush. The feelings of accomplishment you get after finishing something so difficult and being able to say you conquered it are like nothing else. You feel like you could go flip a car afterwards!” says Tim.
In his ten months working for VIDA, Tim has gained quite the loyal following of regulars in his classes. His teaching style embodies what VIDA is all about, which is an encouraging and fun atmosphere where people are excited about fitness and changing their bodies for the better. With 20 classes a week, there’s bound to be one that fits your schedule. Try one out this week and we’re sure you’ll be a regular in no time!
