Ripped Yoga: Vinyasa & Sculpting in One!
This is your typical Vinyasa yoga class, but with the addition of free weights to each sequence. So, imagine hitting your usual warrior two or triangle pose while holding small hand weights (usually no more than 2.5-5 lbs) in each hand. A few extra pounds may not seem like it’d make a huge difference, but you’ll be surprised at how much more effort it requires!
Yoga already requires a ton of core strength and balance to hold poses (especially the more advanced ones) for multiple seconds at a time. The added resistance of the weights intensifies each pose and the energy and strength required to hold it, resulting in stronger, leaner muscles!
Of course, like all our VIDA classes, how much weight you use (or if you use it at all) is optional. You can always drop the weights for a sequence or two if you need to reset, or gradually increase the weight as you get stronger in your practice.
This combination of yoga and sculpting gives you the best of both worlds: the calming, grounding mental effects of yoga (plus improved flexibility, balance and body alignment) in addition to the muscular benefits of strength training (increased metabolism, healthy bones, athletic performance, etc.)
This class is the perfect segway for those already experienced with Vinyasa yoga but lacking strength training, and vice versa. Many yogis who are reluctant to hit the weight room with all the loud music and commotion can use Ripped Yoga as an opportunity to incorporate weight training into their routine, and lifters can benefit from the lengthening and balancing aspects of Vinyasa.
Ripped yoga is offered at U Street, Metropole and Verizon and is a fun, energizing way to mix up your workout routine. If you’re trying a class for the first time, let us know what you think!
