Member Spotlight: Nick Scherer
By Mekita Rivas, VIDA editor/member
Nick Scherer joined VIDA in April 2017, and it’s safe to say that he’s found his #fitfam. Once upon a time, the 33-year-old food and beverage manager played sports competitively, but now his focus is on getting to the gym consistently and maintaining a healthy lifestyle that’s challenging yet sustainable. Nick loves VIDA’s sparkling clean facilities, friendly staff, and state-of-the-art-equipment that’s always well-maintained. We caught up with him to learn more about his motivation to become a part of the VIDA community, his typical workout routine, and how he spends his time outside the gym.
What’s your fitness journey been like up to this point?
I grew up in a very sports-oriented family with two brothers close in age and a lot of daily competition. As a result, the gym was always a part of my life from high school onward. I played football my first year of college in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and I played baseball competitively outside of school with old teammates through my mid 20s. Now it’s just the occasional recreation and drinking sports leagues with friends or through work.
When you joined VIDA, what were your initial goals?
Like most people who join gyms, my initial goals were to develop a healthy routine and to get in as best shape as possible. I started off with an end goal of trying to look a certain way. However, it was the post-workout feeling that I missed the most — the endorphins, mental toughness, and low stress feeling is what I crave. It is so important with the daily grind to have some “me time” in your day.
Describe your typical workout routine.
I like to get to the gym around five days a week, and I focus a good deal of my workouts on weights. Some days are scheduled around a full, upper, or lower body workout. Other days I focus the weight training around circuits, jumping from exercise to exercises with little to no rest to really push my heart rate up. Some days I like to come to the gym to lift as much weight as possible. There is nothing like turning up the volume on the headphones and lifting heavy.
What do you most enjoy about being a VIDA member?
While I haven’t been to other VIDA locations yet, I am blown away by how clean the gym is at The Yards. The staff — from the trainers to the front desk — are friendly, upbeat, and always willing to answer questions. The equipment is well maintained, and the hours are great, even for someone who doesn’t always work normal 9-to-5 hours.
What would you say to someone who isn’t sure about joining VIDA?
It is one of the best decisions I have made in the last few years. I am a big believer in the “healthy body, healthy mind” mantra. Being physically active is essential to mental and psychological well-being. If there is something you should spend money on, spend it on getting that ball rolling and keep it going. I don’t mince words when I say that it is the best gym I’ve belonged to outside of college.
How do you spend your time when you’re not at the gym?
I am trying to catch up on all the exploring and traveling that I missed over the last few years due to being in graduate school. If there’s an opportunity to do that, I’m interested. I enjoy spending time reading and geeking out over science, tech, and history, or cooking until I can’t eat anymore. Outside of that, I am excited for football season — hate away, but go Cowboys!
Any last words of wisdom?
Keep grinding. Believe in yourself. Hard work works! Hi, Mom.
