Whether or not you’re a self-proclaimed ‘early bird’ (who really wants to ‘get the worm’ anyway?), exercising in the morning may be just the shake-up your regular routine needs. Read on to learn three reasons you should consider breaking a sweat in the morning.

Prioritizing your wellness first thing in the morning can have a domino effect on other areas of your life.

Your alarm goes off, and you hit the snooze button—twice. Before you know it, you’re rushing to get out the door in time for your first meeting. That means you skip breakfast, forget to grab your training shoes, and your stress level climbs higher than average before you’ve even had a chance to interact with another human being. We’ve all been there.

Make the difficult decision to wake up and work out, and you’ll have the time and space to approach your decision-making throughout the rest of the day mindfully. Perhaps you’ll reach for a mood-boosting meal rather than one that makes you feel sluggish midday. With a workout under your belt, taking the stairs instead of the elevator feels like a foregone conclusion. Healthy choices beget healthy choices.

From improving mood to increasing your ability to focus, training has the power to transform an otherwise uneventful day into an inspired one. Rather than wait until the afternoon or evening to reap those rewards, start each day with movement to cultivate a sense of accomplishment that will follow you all day long.

There are fewer opportunities to make excuses.

When you plan to hit the gym after a long day at the office, there are countless chances to foil those plans: Can you make an impromptu happy hour after work? A looming deadline just extended your workday. Your brain is fried, and the only cure is Netflix.

When you practice habit stacking, a technique where you pair a desired behavior (working out in the morning) with an already hardwired one (brushing your teeth), squeezing in a morning workout becomes practically inevitable. Before bed, pack your gym bag and place your gym clothes on the bathroom counter, on top of your toothbrush. In the morning, when you go to polish your pearly whites, throw on your fitness attire and grab your pre-packed bag so you can start the day strong. Now when the unexpected strikes, you’ll be ready for it.
