5 Resolutions for Already Fit Folks

January 1stJanuary 1st tends to be the date many self-proclaimed “gym rats” hate.

It’s when tons of people decide this is the year they want to get fit, which results in much higher traffic in the weight room and in group fitness classes than we’re typically used to.

And this usually gets gyms rats in a tizzy, not to mention wishing away January so all these New Year’s resolutioners can be “out of the gym already.”

But before you sign off going to the gym until February, check out these five New Year’s resolutions you already-fit-folks can take on starting today. And don’t forget to track your progress online and you could win a years FREE membership to VIDA Fitness in our #vidaresolutions contest!

1.) Be Welcoming

Yep, you read that correctly, be welcoming to all those “get fit this year” resolutioners.

I also used to be someone that would get aggravated at heightened gym traffic, but one year it clicked that all these new faces jumped a huge hurdle in simply coming to the gym.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like exercise, or you feel like you have a weight loss journey ahead of you, getting to the gym is scary, y’all.

And as someone who wishes everyone would invest in their health through exercise, why would I want to drive new members of our fit family away by being annoyed at their presence? No, no, no…I want you to stay past January and I want to see your face in class every Tuesday after work! We’ll sweat it out together!

Rather than going in ready for battle to find a spot in class, take a look around and see if there’s a face you’ve never seen before, go up to them and say, “are you new to VIDA? I’ve never seen you here before, welcome!” and introduce yourself.

Yeah, that might sound awkward (for both you and them), but that gesture could make a huge difference in someone’s fitness journey. Rather than them forging this new road alone, you just showed them, ‘Hey, this isn’t just you, we’re all moving forward to be healthier together.”

2.) Share Your Resolution

Ok, I’ve already suggested you go introduce yourself to a stranger, so now you might be ready to quit reading at this point, but please just hang in there with me!

If you really want to take it a step further this year, not only could you befriend a new face at the gym, you could also share your resolution with them.

So if someone mentions their resolution to get fit / lose weight / exercise regularly, rather than giving them advice they’ve probably already heard (and may not want), tell them what goal you’re trying to work on this year and follow it up by suggesting being accountability buddies.

I’m telling you, it works. And you don’t have to be BFF’s with this new person, it could be just someone who you have a quick chat with at the gym who gives you some encouragement, and you give some in return.

Who knows, you could totally make a new BFF, and that would be kind of awesome…I actually married my gym BFF, so try that one on for size.

3.) Drink More Water

Alright, now I’m at more traditional-type resolutions, so you can take a big sigh of “that was awkward” relief.

One thing I think a lot of fit people fail to do is drink enough water (raising my own hand way up high here). We drink water while we’re working out, and maybe a little before or after, but for the majority of the day beverages could include everything from coffee, soda, coffee, energy drinks, smoothies, more coffee.

Now it’s easy to drink water when it’s scorching hot outside, but when it’s cold, all I want to do is curl up with a hot mug of something from Starbucks.

So if you’re someone who let’s H2O take a backseat in your daily diet, start incorporating more and notice the difference it makes in your energy levels and workout performance.

(Bonus Tip: for people who are weird like me and don’t like drinking cold drinks when it’s freezing outside, heat up some water and add a wedge of lemon. It’s really helped me with consuming more water this time of year!)

4.) Move Out of Your Fitness Comfort Zone

Some of us are creatures of habit. We rotate the same workouts, or say we don’t like certain types of workouts when in reality we’ve never tried them.

Even if you’re not feeling like you’re in a rut, just try something new for the hell of it. You may experience a benefit you never expected or discover another area you need to build strength in.

Moving out of your fitness comfort zone could mean taking a group fitness class when you usually go about your workouts solo, increase your weights, or try taking yoga before work just one day a week.

5.) Treat Yourself

You work really hard in the gym, and that’s great, but it’s easy to get sucked in to that go-go-go schedule where working out isn’t so much enjoyable as much as it is a daily item to check off your to-do list.

Give yourself a treat by making the time to book a monthly massage or facial at Aura Spa or spend 10 minutes in the steam room a few times a week, just something to relax.
