Dumbbells Are Your Friend
By: TV Host & Naturalist David Mizejewski
Well, I’m back on the road for work again. This month has been particularly travel-filled, and when I’m traveling it means there’s no way for me to work out at VIDA. But I can’t use that as an excuse to not work out at all anymore, which is what I used to do. Wherever I am, I’ve got to figure out how to get my lifting and cardio in. In this case, it was in my hotel gym in Arkansas.
I cannot overstate how key it is working with my trainer Susie Powell when I’m home in DC to put together workouts for me to do while I’m traveling and can’t physically get into a VIDA location. Not only does it give me marching orders to follow so I get a good full-body workout just like when I train with Susie when I’m home at VIDA, it also adds a level of expectation and accountability. When I’m home and see Suz, I know she’s going to ask me if I did the workouts she assigned to me and I can’t disappoint her (or myself) by not doing it.
For these on-the-road workouts (as well as my in-VIDA ones, come to think of it), dumbbells are my friend. Even the most basic hotel gyms usually have a set of dumbbells, and you can do so much with just that.
Today I did:
Three sets of 12 reps each with dumbbells – followed by medicine ball crunches and leg extensions on a machine:
– Chest presses
– Bent over rows
– Bicep curls
– Tricep extensions
And now I’m feeling swole and loving it.
Next week I’ll be back working out at VIDA.
